1965 Jaguar S-Type 3.8 Litre

Sold for £7,875

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: HPC222C
Chassis No: 1B53794DN
Mot Expiry: March 2010

Launched in 1963, the Jaguar S-type was marketed as more of an 'executive' car than its MKII sibling. Boasting notably superior ride and handling characteristics thanks to the adoption of independent rear suspension, it also enjoyed a more spacious interior complete with dashboard-mounted walnut centre console. Visually distinguished by its elongated boot, flatter roofline and hooded headlamps, the model was powered by a choice of 3.4litre (210bhp) or 3.8litre (220bhp) DOHC straight-six engines allied to either four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. Maintaining the Coventry manufacturer's reputation for speed, luxury and mechanical refinement, the S-type remained in production until 1968 by which time approximately 25,000 had been sold (10,000 3.4s Vs 15,000 3.8s).

H&H are indebted to the vendor for the following description: "English registered as 'HPC 222C', this 3.8litre example is believed to have been sent to South Africa by Henlys Garage of London before returning to the UK during 1994 in what one might assume to be rust free condition. Which, on checking the bottoms of the doors, the boot floor, and the excellent undercarriage, will only compound that assumption. Upon its repatriation the vehicle underwent an extensive restoration, the quality of which can now be truly appreciated as it has well stood the test of time. The mileage covered since work was completed is uncertain but, on the assumption that the saloon had its odometer zeroed, accompanying MOT certificates seem to suggest the Jaguar has done some 25,000 post-refurbishment miles. All the original numbers match including the registration number and the car drives impeccably, gear changes are smooth with no synchromesh problems, overdrive is instant and smooth with no clunking, oil pressure remains a constant 40psi when running at operating temperature and the car seemingly does not overheat. Power steering operates well and she steers and brakes in a straight line and has recently been MOT tested with no advisories. All the tyres are relatively fresh and matching with the spare having never been on the road and she will have been driven 70 miles to the auction. Please check the history file, the car comes with an original Sales Brochure, Operating Handbook, Sales and Service Facility Directory, Service Manual, Spare Parts Catalogue and Jaguar Heritage Certificate. The car also comes with a box of assorted servicing spares including new oil filter, plugs / points, belts and hoses etc".

All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
