The Morgan Motor Company owes its existence to three-wheelers. Introduced at the 2011 Geneva Salon after a hiatus in production of almost sixty years, the last generation Three-Wheeler was delightfully ‘old school’ in its design ethos. Side-stepping all sorts of legislative headaches by being classified as a motorcycle rather than a motorcar, the two-seater was powered by a S&S 1983cc OHV V-twin engine allied to Mazda five-speed manual transmission. The tubular chassis frame was equipped with all round independent suspension, rack and pinion steering and clothed in aluminium. Reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 6 seconds and 115mph, the Three Wheeler was praised by the contemporary motoring press for its precise steering, agile handling and the enormous grin it typically put on a driver’s face! Morgan offered a choice of twelve exterior colours and thirty interior ones but were happy to undertake bespoke commissions too. Huge fun unless gridlocked in a thunderstorm, the model became something of an instant classic with demand outstripping supply for much of its nine-year production life (2012-2021).

Purchased new by its sole registered keeper on 6th April 2012, chassis SA9M3WV2EBP202045 joined an impressive Morgan collection which also included the 1933 Super Sports in this same auction (LOT 66). The vendor acquired both three-wheelers as being in need of recommissioning but other commitments have prevented him from returning them to the road. Indeed, he cites continuing pressures on his time as the reason for sale. Like its much older sibling, ‘NG03 MOG’ has not been run for several years. However, its engine and brakes are said to be free. With just one registered keeper from new and a low mileage of circa 10,000, it is hoped but not guaranteed that recommissioning the Morgan will be a straightforward exercise. An endearing modern classic and surely a worthwhile project?
