After a lengthy gestation period, the now ubiquitous Porsche 911 entered production in 1964 and, despite Porsche's own attempts to replace the model with the 928 in the 1970s, much evolved versions remain in production to this day. The original version featured rack and pinion steering and both torsion bar suspension and disc brakes all round. It was powered by a dry-sump, air-cooled, 2-litre, flat six engine which was overhung at the rear and allied to a five-speed manual transmission. Power output was restricted to 130bhp, though with an all-up weight of just 1,080 kg this was sufficient to provide the newcomer with a top speed of over 130 mph and a
0-60mph time of just 8.5 seconds. In 1968, the 911's wheelbase was increased by 57mm, and the rear overhang reduced by the same amount. At the same time, some 22lb was saved from the engine crankcase - changes that greatly improved the car's handling. In 1969 the engine capacity was increased to 2.2-litres and hiked once more in 1971, this time to 2.4-litres. The corresponding outputs were as follows: 911T (130 bhp), 911E (165 bhp) and 911S (190 bhp). The revised model also featured the new, stronger 915 transmission with conventional H pattern change.
The righthand drive Porsche being offered here, started life as a 1972 2.4-litre 911E, but has subsequently been restored/reconfigured using the shell, powerplant, interior etc of a 1980's '3.2' model. During the update, the colour was changed to its current Deep Metallic Blue, and the sills, floor, 'A posts' and rear wing 'kidney bowls' all replaced. A sports stainless steel exhaust was added too. Effectively a 1980s 911 with the benefit of FOC annual licence fee, LRD 529L is currently felt by the vendor to have an 'excellent' 231bhp 3.2-litre engine and 'good' bodywork, paintwork and five-speed manual transmission, while he accepts that the Blue leather interior trim could now do with a bit of 'TLC'. The Porsche comes complete with a selection of old MOTs and one valid into November next year.
