Yamaha were credited by many with the re-invention of the big single when they introduced the TT500 in 1975, following it with the release of the road equipped XT500. The model came about as a result of a request made by Yamaha US who believed that there was a market for a machine capable of covering the great open spaces of the States in a manner not addressed by the then available two-strokes. Built to be rugged, reliable and handsome the TT and XT500's proved an instant success in both the States and Europe. Although intended primarily as a "fun bike" the TT gained some competition success resulting in machines being modified by specialists for moto cross, a trend that culminated in the introduction of the factory HL scrambler.
The TT500D offered has been thoroughly restored by Yamaha specialist Chris Robinson of Wainstalls, originally for his own use, as a White Brothers Special, using DRZ400E forks, Paioli rear shocks, YZ/TT500 wheels, a Profab swinging arm and a YZ400 alloy tank. The engine overhaul included new main bearings, a new, genuine Yamaha rod and bearing kit, new piston and rings (of the standard bore), a new standard camshaft, bearings and followers with the later type drilled pad feet improving lubrication, a new camchain and a double top oil feed. The inlet and exhaust ports have both been smoothed out and a special manifold was fabricated to allow the use of a 36mm VM Mikuni carburettor equipped with a K&N air filter. A Supertrapp silencer has been matched to the exhaust pipe. Described as being in "excellent" condition in all respects following the restoration, the motorcycle has only recorded about 2 hours running time since and is offered with a Swansea V5C.
