Introduced in 1965, the BMW 2000C was a collaboration between Karmann, the coachbuilder who made the cars, and BMW's chief-designer Wilhelm Hofmeister. The new coupé used the M10 2-litre engine from the recently introduced `neu-Klasse', and remained current until the arrival of the E9 2800. The distinctive `shark-nose' front-end styling with its unusual wrap-around headlamps was a trademark feature of the 2000C, which came with a manual box and single carburettor as standard. The CA boasted the same 100bhp single carb motor but allied it to an auto box. Out of 14,000 C-series cars sold between 1965 and 1968, just 3,249 are thought to have been CA models. Advertising of the time took a `handles like a Grand Prix car but cossets like a limousine' angle and indeed, the quality of the interior appointments and fittings is unusually high for the period, while the sophisticated multi-link rear suspension is an advanced independent design. M10 engines are known for their longevity, and the light weight of the four-cylinder engine means that a properly set-up C-series coupe can be sweeter handling than its younger six-cylinder brethren.
This right-hand drive CA example is reputed to be an early UK import and still features period raised-digit retro-reflective 3M numberplates. The milometer reads 41,525, and the condition of the interior would seem commensurate with little use, as the velour cloth seating, though luxurious, is not very hard-wearing. The Karmann build-plate is present, and the spares situation for these cars is very healthy, with good back-up from BMW Classic, formerly BMW Mobile Tradition. Finished in Polaris Silver with blue upholstery and matt-finish wood trim, this BMW has been on static display as part of a private Lake District collection for many years. Although reported to have been driven into the collection building under its own power, the coupe is currently a non-runner and will require re-commissioning prior to road use. Sold strictly as viewed it is accompanied by a green logbook and V5 / V5C Registration Documents.
