Lot details Registration No: EG 9473 Chassis No: 23178 Mot Expiry: April 2007
Entering production in 1946, the new Alvis TA14 was a successful update of the pre-WW2 12/70 (designed by George Lanchester). With a two-inch longer wheelbase and four-inch wider track as well as some additional chassis bracing, it offered an improved ride and sharper handling. Credited with 65bhp, its 1892cc OHV four-cylinder engine was mated to a four-speed manual gearbox (with synchromesh on the top three gears) which drove the rear wheels via a hypoid back axle. Reputedly capable of over 75mph, the model employed Girling twin leading shoe drum brakes all round. While the majority were supplied as Mulliner bodied four-door saloons, the TA14 could also be had with two-door drophead coupe coachwork by Carbodies or Tickford.
According to information supplied by the vendor, this particular Carbodies Drophead Coupe was first registered to a master at Oundle School in Leicestershire. Passing through the hands of a Peterborough grocer thereafter, 'EG 9473' was apparently purchased by its third keeper Sheila Frith in September 1963. Driven on an everyday basis until 1970, the Alvis was subsequently laid up for thirteen years. Awoken by a repaint, new pistons and a reground crankshaft, its usage was restricted to rallying thereafter. Acquired from the Frith family in August 1986, 'EG 9473' has been in the current ownership ever since. Taken off the road the following year, the Alvis was stripped down, shot blasted and repainted in its present maroon over black livery but otherwise left untouched. Only recently emerging from storage, we understand that it has since benefited from "brand new maroon leather upholstery, a new black mohair hood, new carpets, re-lacquered woodwork, five new tyres and a new exhaust". Thought to have had approximately £12,000 spent on it over the last fifteen months, the TA14 was treated to £5,000 worth of mechanical fettling by marque specialists Red Triangle including a new steering box and clutch. Believed but not warranted to have covered 90,000 miles from new, 'EG 9473' is described by the seller as being in "fabulous condition waiting to be enjoyed". A well proportioned and practical 1940s drophead coupe, this lovely Alvis is offered for sale with "all original documents".
