Herbert Austin formed his own company in 1906. During WWI, Austin expanded and prospered in the armourments industry - but, in peacetime, his reliance on the Austin 20 was to prove to be a mistake and, by 1921, the company was in receivership. Realising that he needed to appeal to a wider market, happily Austin was able to restructure, make smaller models and survive.
This Longbridge, Birmingham-built Austin 10 was shipped to Forsdick Motors of Durban, South Africa, in 1946, when, according to an original receipt on file, the right-hand drive model cost £452. The four-door saloon did come back home, however, in 1954.
Chassis condition is rated as sound, with bodywork showing lots of original patina, and black paintwork and brown leather fair. Reportedly OK are 1125cc four-cylinder motor and clutch, although third gear is declared worn.
The 65,100 mileage when entered is believed by the current owner to be the genuine total mileage from new, the tax disc current until the end of May, the latest MOT certificate valid until September. This would make an ideal starter classic, says the vendor, who tells us that it drives well.
