Ford's ubiquitous Transit range needs little introduction. Launched in 1965, it has been Europe's best-selling light commercial vehicle for the last 40 years, and is now into its fourth generation and MK7 incarnation. More intriguingly, in the 1970s, no less than 95 percent of robberies employing a vehicle apparently involved a Transit of some description! Famed for bringing car-like handling, driveability and comfort to the van world, it was the ideal base for all manner of conversions, including motor caravans. Power in the early models was supplied by 1.7 or 2.0-litre V4 versions of Ford's Essex powerplant. The suspension was deliberately basic, with live axles front and rear. A wide track provided exceptional stability.
The Transit-based range of Canterbury Camper Vans were certainly popular in their day, and the example offered is a smartly presented Savannah II finished in Pale Blue and powered by the optional 1.7-litre engine. The vendor informs us `LWB 282K' appears to have been converted in 1971 and, "except for a couple of wall panels, the interior is original and therefore shows some signs of wear and tear and minor repairs". He describes the vehicle's engine, gearbox, bodywork and paintwork as "good" and is selling it complete with period awning and an MOT valid into September 2013.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
