Two years after introducing the highly successful Morris Eight, Leonard Lord took a rest from the motor industry before joining Morris's great rival, Austin, in the role of Longbridge Works Director. The magic of the ubiquitous Austin Seven had by now worn thin and sales were dwindling; despite the introduction of the so-called `Big Seven'. Lord's rapid solution was the Austin 8, a much more streamlined model featuring an all-new semi-monocoque frame. Power came from a high-compression version of the Big Seven's 900cc four-cylinder sidevalve unit. The newcomer was offered in Two- and Four-Door Saloon, Two- and Four-Seat Tourer and Van guises. Sales continued to 1943, when war forced a temporary halt to the Eight's manufacture. `EOY 982' is a rare and apparently very original Two-Door Saloon from 1939, the Black exterior of which is matched to Pale Blue interior trim. A unique opportunity for aficionados of the model everywhere.
