The XBR500 was in a sense a modern motorcycle influenced by the past. Introduced in 1985 the new machine sought to capture the spirit of the great sporting singles of the past in a modern user friendly machine. The new model drew heavily on their experience producing four stroke trail bikes from the XL range, sharing the four radial valve cylinder head layout. The result was an economical engine capable delivering over 50 miles to the gallon and a top speed of 108 mph. The frame was of steel construction with twin rear shocks and telescopic forks and braking was supplied by a single front disc and drum rear brake. The machines styling was understated and placed the rider "within" the motorcycle. The first year's production rapidly found buyers, however the following season's production was much slower to move off the show room floor reflecting the niche appeal of the motorcycle. The low volume of sales achieved by the model during its production life has resulted in them being in demand today by riders who appreciate the models virtue.
This example was purchased by the vendor's husband in 1991 seeing limited use for a little while after its acquisition. It was then laid up with the intention of a rebuild occurring following the owners retirement; sadly events overtook the owner resulting in the machine being offered for sale. It is presented in complete condition requiring restoration and is accompanied by a Swansea V5C.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
