The 1961-launched Jaguar E Type caused a sensation in the press and on the roads. For not only did it employ monocoque construction, independent suspension and disc brakes all round, was clothed in very aerodynamic bodywork and powered by the already well proven XK motor of 3781cc capacity producing 265bhp, but also the new sportscar was extremely good looking in both open and closed fixed head coupe form. By 1971, an even more torquey 5343cc V12 motor appeared under Series 3 bonnets.
This 1972-built E Type, an original righthand drive S3 V12 coupe, has been in the same family ownership since January 1999, since when, it is claimed, very few miles have been driven. During the last seventeen years, in fact, only 19,000 miles have been clocked up. Whilst the 78,863 miles displayed when entered for this auction is claimed by the vendor to be the genuine total from new and, indeed, this is confirmed by mileage entries on a fifteen strong run of old MOTs on file.
The monocoque is said to be good, the body panels and Willow Green paintwork average. The green leather interior is described as good, and both the 5.3-litre 12-cylinder engine and 4-speed manual gearbox are reportedly in good order as is all the electrical equipment. The fixed head is currently taxed until June of next year and the MOT will not require re-testing until next July.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
