The most outstanding British sportscars of the postwar era were the XKs from the William Lyons run Jaguar Cars of Coventry. The XK140 replacing 150 was equally well received when it started coming off the line in 1957. Although recognisable as a direct descendant of the XK120, the 150 appeared to be very much wider and roomier than previous XKs and was certainly far more refined and comfortable.
The most significant changes to specification were the brakes, with Jaguar Le Mans developed Dunlop disc brakes all round, and the previously special order SE version of the 3442cc 6-cylinder producing 210bhp becoming standard-fit. Available as roadster, drophead or fixed head coupe, just 9395 150s are reckoned to have been manufactured at Browns Lane between 1957 and the spring of 1961, when the far more volume-made E-Type replacement hit the road.
This 1958-built Jaguar XK150 coupe is an original righthand drive 'Special Equipment' model with the benefit of overdrive, chrome wire wheels, spotlamps and, in this case, a stainless steel exhaust. In last ownership for twenty years, during which time it was carefully looked after and treated to an extensive restoration in the mid-1990s, the fixed head's chassis and bodywork as well as Old English White paintwork are said to be very good and black interior excellent. Both 3.4-litre six and 4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive are reportedly in very good order, and it was MOTd only last month.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
