1936 Vauxhall DX 14/6 Coupe

Lot details
Registration No: AHR 870
Chassis No: 655116
Mot Expiry: May 2010

This Vauxhall Light Six Coupe was ordered new by silver screen actress, Anna Lee, who starred in films such as `King Solomon's Mines', `How Green was my Valley' and many others. She sold the car in 1939 before relocating to the USA where she later appeared in over 70 films and TV movies. The 14/6 was then owned by a local farmer for many years and bought by a neighbouring garage proprietor when the farm was sold. In the late 1980s the Coupe was purchased by a Vauxhall Dealership and subjected to a `ground up' restoration which was carried out over a number of years and once completed the car was displayed in their showroom. The restoration was well detailed in invoices and photographs, which are in the history file. Since 2000 the car has been owned by a Vauxhall Club Member, who has used it extensively both in the UK and Europe. The Coupe took part in the Round Britain Vauxhall Centenary Rally and many other events.

The Vauxhall Light Six boasted quite an advanced specification for 1936. Based around a cross-braced, ladder-frame chassis equipped with cable-operated four-wheel drum brakes, it was notable for being among the first British-built cars to feature independent front suspension and an all-synchromesh manual gearbox. Powered by a 1781cc straight-six engine that utilised overhead valvegear and coil ignition, the 14/6 was reputedly capable of 70mph. The coupe was refurbished to its original factory specification including the external colour of Florador Blue with Ivory striping. The cream leather interior was apparently specially ordered by Miss Lee and has the added advantage of a fabric covered sunroof. This charming Vauxhall is offered in "ready to use condition", with newly issued MOT, handbook, service manual, parts list, photographs and various correspondence relating to Anna Lee and the car's history, RF60 and period advertisements.
