Lot details Registration No: TE 893 Chassis No: LM-5147 Mot Expiry: April 2005
In an attempt to crack a wider market, and to reduce customer's £1 per horsepower tax bill, Vauxhall Chief Engineer C E King came up with the 14/40 M Type in 1922. The new car had a 2297cc 4-pot motor with detachable cylinder head and spiral-bevel rear axle. Initially, on disc road wheels, it cost £720-750 according to spec - compared to the more pricey £1100 D and £1195 E Types. The 14/40 became the LM in 1924, when it gained a 4-speed gearbox and balloon tyre shod wires.
This 1927-made Vauxhall LM 14/40 with Melton bodywork and dickey seat is presented in green over black with black leather and has a complete set of weather equipment including tonneau. Complete with distinctive Vauxhall Griffin mascot, the open 2-seater has side-mounted toolbox containing starting handle, lead hammer and blank radiator cap. Original handbook and workshop manual copy are included.
Restored in 2000, the work included engine rebuild with new cylinder head and radiator core, new clutch and gearbox overhaul, new exhaust with attractive tone, magneto and dynamo overhaul, complete rewire, renewing of fuel lines and brake linings, complete overhaul of dashboard and instruments, replacing all five 21in diameter wire wheels and tyres and renewing carpets.
Since this rebuild, the car has been used extremely sparingly and, accordingly it remains in outstanding condition with chassis, bodywork, paintwork, interior, engine, gearbox and electrical equipment all reportedly in excellent order. The MOT is current until next April.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
