The Michelotti-styled TR4 was introduced in 1961 as a replacement for the TR3A, and had an enlarged 2138cc engine, wider track, rack and pinion steering and an all-synchromesh gearbox. The final iteration of the model was the TR4A unveiled in 1965, which featured further small styling changes and upgrades.
The TR4A being sold was supplied new in right-hand drive to DJ Demades & Sons Ltd of Nicosia, Cyprus in June 1966. Not much is known of its interim history, but the past two years have seen the Triumph treated to a very extensive and painstaking restoration by its previous owner, a retired race engineer. Bills on file confirm that over £20,000 was spent on parts alone and the performance has been considerably uprated. The engine was thoroughly overhauled by classic racing specialists, Archers Garage of Birmingham, and contains new liners and pistons; big valve high-compression head (converted to run on unleaded); lightened and balanced flywheel and crankshaft; rear crankshaft oil seal conversion; fast road cam; Revotec electric cooling fan; 4-into-1 tubular manifold and stainless steel sports exhaust. The unit has been rolling road tuned and should produce 140bhp once fully run-in. The gearbox, overdrive and back axle have been refurbished by TR racer Peter Cox, of Cox & Buckles, Wimbledon. The suspension has been stiffened and lowered one inch and a front anti-roll bar fitted. Wider 72-spoke competition wire wheels and new tyres have been added all round. The car is now said to perform superbly and is certainly in eye catching condition throughout, with sparkling White coachwork and new Black leather interior. It is also fitted with the desirable Surrey Top. 'BFH 425D' is being sold with a large file of bills and photographs documenting the restoration, and is taxed and MOT'd until January 2012. A very smart example of an increasingly sought after model.
