Lot details Registration No: ABH154C Chassis No: GHN3L31570 Mot Expiry: May 2004
Before being transformed into a stunning rally car by Brown and Gammons in 1990, this originally 1963-manufactured MGB roadster belonged to a US enthusiast in the `Sunshine State' of California. The shell was stripped, sandblasted, with panels refurbished or replaced, aluminium valance fitted, chassis jig-checked, shell acid etch primed, outer surfaces cellulose finished and engine bay and boot area painted in two-pack.
Specialists B&G then invested over 500 hours in preparing car, engine, gearbox, back axle, electrics and interior for competition. With single Weber 45 DCOE, special B&G head, 770 rally cam, +40 pistons and big bore manifold for the 1.8-litre motor, comp-spec overdrive on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears, and 4.55:1 diff, up to 130bhp at the wheels was forthcoming. Upgrades included competition water and oil radiators, negative camber wishbones, rally springs, uprated dampers, grooved brake discs and 72 spoke wires. Driver and co-driver in the works hardtop equipped cockpit were protected by a full roll-cage in body colour, full harnesses and a plumbed-in extinguisher system. Motalita wheel, cut down works type dash, map reading light and twin horns completed the ultimate specification.
The vendor says this right hand drive sports-car was driven by Sir Stirling Moss on the Pirelli Marathon, taking part in the 1990 and 1991 events with second and third fastest times up the Stelvio, and scoring class wins at Silverstone and Zandvoort 1991. Clearly still highly competitive and in good condition, ABH 154C was again a class winner on last year's Welsh Three Castles Classic.
