For many the definitive Jaguar sports saloon, the MKII was introduced in October 1959. A peerless blend of elegance and muscularity, its sleek lines clothed an evolution of the Coventry marque's first monocoque design. Powered by derivatives of the same XK DOHC straight-six engine that had swept Jaguar to five Le Mans victories, the MKII was quick to dominate contemporary saloon car racing. Equipped with coil-and-wishbone independent front suspension, a leaf-sprung Salisbury rear axle and servo-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, the range-topping 3.8 boasted nearly seven times the horsepower of a Mini 850 and a 126mph top speed! Blessed with one of the all time great automotive interiors, its stylish instrumentation, rich wood veneers and sumptuous leather upholstery all conspired to cosset and cocoon occupants.
First registered as 'NWC 364' on November 9th 1962, this 'matching numbers' example was originally finished in Opalescent Dark Blue with Grey leather upholstery. Supplied new to Leslie Fellow Esq. of Leigh-on-Sea, it passed to Alfred Cheshire of Billericay less than two years later. A surviving MOT certificate indicates that the Jaguar had covered some 49,273 miles by March 1974. Taken off the road following the death of Mr Cheshire's wife, the MKII remained garaged until the late 1990s when it entered the current (third) ownership. Found to be structurally very sound, the sports saloon had attention paid to its brakes, rear wheel bearings, suspension, power steering, subframe mounts, shock absorbers, heater, petrol tank, radiator, propshaft and exhaust etc. Further benefiting from an engine and automatic transmission overhaul (plus unleaded fuel conversion), the Jaguar was refinished in its correct period livery. Something of a timewarp, the sports saloon's interior retains its factory fitted upholstery and wood trim. Believed but not warranted to have covered just 52,000 miles from new, this charming three owner MKII 3.8 litre is offered for sale with history file (original buff logbook, numerous restoration invoices etc) and MOT certificate valid until July 2012.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
