Having rescued Willys from their financial woes but failed in his attempt to wrest control of the firm from John Willys, Walter Chrysler obtained a controlling stake in the ailing Maxwell Motor Company. By 1925 he had dropped the Maxwell name, rebranded the business as the Chrysler Corporation and launched the Chrysler Series 70; elements of which could reportedly be traced back to a prototype that was under construction during his days at Willys. It was a 3.5-litre six cylinder-engined model aimed at providing his customers with a well-engineered car at an affordable price. In many ways it was ahead of its time, featuring a high compression engine with full pressure lubrication and oil filter, carburetter air filter and braking on all four wheels - items still unseen on many cars of the period.
The Series 70 on offer is a Roadster from 1926 that sports Cream over Burgundy coachwork and a Beige leather interior. The Chrysler was the favourite of its now deceased owner, who used it in preference to the other members of his interesting car collection, including a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Tourer. It was reportedly sold new by the Australian distributor Larke, Neave and Carter of Sydney, whose plaque still adorns the fascia. It was imported to the UK in 1998 and has apparently won 'Best of Show' accolades both here and in Australia. It featured on the Daimler-Chrysler stand at the 2006 Goodwood Festival of Speed and was used regularly by the late owner for such events as the Irish VVCC's Gordon Bennett Rally. The vendor currently regards the coachwork and paintwork as "very good", the interior trim as "excellent", and reports that the engine "started and ran well" during a recent test. The transmission is "presumed to be OK". The venerable Chrysler is being sold without MOT or tax.
