Always a company which has followed a policy of progressive and gradual refinement of its models, masterfully led still by the ever attentive Mr. Tony Crook, the Bristol company has frequently employed novel solutions taken from its experience in aircraft design, especially in the area of ergonomics. This 'stand apart' approach to body design, coupled with the reliable melodious power of Chrysler US V8 engines and impeccable build quality has ensured the cars' continued appeal to a more discerning type of clientel. The launch of the 412 in 1975 mated this traditional chassis and 6.6 litre Chrysler engine to a new Zagato designed convertible bodyshell, which was altered in 1976 to incorporate the fashionable targa roof facility. Continual improvement saw a 5.9 litre Chrysler engine replace the 6.6 litre unit in 1978 whilst in 1980 the ultimate development of the line was launched in the form of the formidable turbocharged Beaufighter - identified by the replacement of single rectangular headlamps by twin square units. In this form production of the car continued until the end of the decade, a full convertible model being made available for export only from 1987 onwards.
