Lot details Registration No: P 428 Chassis No: B46GA Mot Expiry: Exempt
Thought to be a member of the Tate & Lyle dynasty, P. Lyle Esq. took delivery of chassis B46GA during May 1936. An early 4.25 Litre model fitted with Park Ward Sports Saloon coachwork, it bore his distinctive `P 428' number plate (retained to this day but on a non-transferable basis). Acquiring an HJ Mulliner body during 1948, the Bentley fell into disrepair over the following decades and had been reduced to a running rolling chassis by the time it entered the current ownership in 2000. Determined to create an open two-seater that was suitable for "touring and the occasional hillclimb", the vendor had chassis B46GA shortened by 12-inches as part of an extensive `nut and bolt' refurbishment. As well as attention to its suspension, steering and brakes (new shackle pins, bushes, bearings, ball joints, kingpins, brake rods, Alfin brake drums), the two-seater gained a larger capacity fuel tank (22 gallons), braided fuel lines, Fiennes overhauled shock absorbers and rejuvenated wire wheels shod with fresh tyres. Further benefiting from a new wiring loom, electronic ignition, replacement high ratio differential, electric cooling fan and checked over steering box / gearbox, the Bentley had its original engine (number U7BM) thoroughly overhauled. Predominantly carried out by Padgett Motor Engineers, work included a new clutch, skimmed / lightened flywheel, unleaded cylinder head, spin-on full-flow oil filter upgrade, overhauled water pump / distributor, reground / nitrided crankshaft, reprofiled camshaft, shell bearing conversion, refurbished carburettors and new liners / forged alloy pistons / R-Type Continental rods etc. Bodied in alloy over a lightweight tubular frame, the reconfigured 4.25 Litre sports a fold-flat windscreen, tonneau cover, side-mounted touring box and luggage space behind the Neil Davis Racing supplied leather seats. Still being run-in, this magnificent Bentley Special is only being offered for sale to assist with a self-build house project.
