When Mercedes-Benz bring out a new SL roadster, you can be sure that the model range is going to be around for a very long time. Not only will the SL remain virtually unchanged in Mercedes dealers' showrooms for several years, but also examples will be seen being driven and enjoyed out and about on the roads of the world for many decades after that. For the SL has most probably become the most enduring of all collector vehicles. In any case, Mercedes build quality, particularly a decade or more ago, was second to one.
When launched in 1971, the larger, heavier, more distinguished looking 280SL was nonetheless a far more effective high speed motorway express. Additional 350 and 450SLs, powered by S Class motors, were added to the catalogue and, in this shape, the S continued well into the 1980s, albeit with different options.
We are delighted to be auctioning this genuine one aristocratic owned 280SL which, we are assured, has always been chauffeur pampered from new in 1983, since when the right-hand drive car has done a believed genuine 131,000 total mileage. The current condition of the convertible bodyshell is described as being excellent and the same goes for the blue interior, while the paintwork in 2-tone blue is said to be very good. Both 2746cc 6-cylinder engine and automatic transmission are said to be in excellent order and the electrical equipment reportedly working well. Both MOT and tax disc are current too.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
