Jaguar's E-Type was actually the direct successor to the legendary D-Type and replaced the XK120, 140 and 150 line, a very hard act to follow, in March 1961. Initially, the futuristic looking E-Type Series I monocoque had the 265bhp 3781cc 6-cylinder twin cam underbonnet with independent suspension and disc brakes all round. Open 2-seater roadster or fixed head coupe versions were offered, initially with headlamps faired-in to the nose, later, being set into the wings with flat glasses. October 1964 saw the Series I E-Type's 3.8 capacity go up to 4235cc and, though the power output stayed the same, usefully, the torque was increased. Even the owners of early E-Types were able to enjoy 150mph performance for less than £2100 (compare that with the £3755 cost of a DB4 from rivals Aston Martin!).
This E-Type, a righthand drive 2+2 coupe on wires which first left the Browns Lane, Coventry, factory production line in 1969, has been in present ownership since 1986, before which there were only two former owners. Included with the car is a well documented history file which also contains an original service manual and a Haynes workshop manual for the model. The current condition of the fixed head body, above and below, is claimed to be good, the white paintwork and black leather interior also good, and the 4.2-litre six and 4-speed manual gearbox reportedly in good order.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
