Lot details Registration No: NPX254D Chassis No: CTC72228 Mot Expiry: May 2011
Launched in 1961, the Michelotti styled TR4 was the first TR-series sports car to incorporate wind-up windows and through-flow ventilation. With independent coil-sprung front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and disc / drum brakes; the newcomer's chassis layout was similar to that of its TR3A predecessor. However, the adoption of rack and pinion steering and a four-inch wider track gave the later model notably better handling. Powered by a 2138cc, four-cylinder OHV engine developing some 104bhp and 128lbft of torque, the TR4 was reputedly capable of 110mph and 0-60mph in 10.5 seconds. Such performance was easily accessed thanks to the presence of synchromesh on each of the four speeds in its manual gearbox (another TR first). Updated in late 1964 as the TR4A, the two-seater gained a new grille, revised body-to-chassis mountings and most importantly of all independent rear suspension. Though, some twenty-five percent of TR4A cars built utilised a more American market friendly 'live' rear axle set-up.
Finished in white with black upholstery, this particular IRS (independent rear suspension) example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. Reportedly belonging to the first of its "two previous keepers" for some twenty years, the Triumph is further understood to have been "maintained to a high standard" with more recent fettling including the installation of "a new stainless steel exhaust, clutch, water pump, radiator, steering rack and window screen". Riding on wire wheels, the two-seater is said to "drive well" and to have benefited from "a recent service and fresh MOT". Sporting a rollover bar and bootlid-mounted luggage rack, this appealing TR4A is offered for sale with "history going back years via old MOTs" and current MOT certificate valid until May 2011.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
