  Lot 68

1969 Maserati Ghibli

Lot details
Registration No: WYL111H
Chassis No: AM1151080

The lightly trafficked autostradas and loosely enforced speed limits of mid 1960s Italy made it the perfect breeding ground for first generation supercars. Launched at the 1966 Turin Salon and penned by Giorgetto Guigiaro, then head stylist of Carozzeria Ghia, the Ghibli's sensationally futuristic lines hid an evolution of Maserati's well-proven tubular-steel chassis frame (albeit with additional strengthening struts). Equipped with independent coil and wishbone front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, the provision of a Salisbury limited slip differential, Girling disc brakes and effective anti-roll bars imbued it with notably good handling. Praised by the contemporary motoring press for its stunning performance, the new GT was reputedly capable 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds, 0-100mph in 15.2 seconds and 168 mph. Throughout its production run from 1967 to 1973, the Ghibli proved itself worthy of the trident badge.

Previously owned by an employee at specialist Bill McGrath, this RHD example retains its original and rare (it is rumoured only 50 such cars were built) Borg Warner automatic transmission. Featured in a 1982 issue of Classic Cars, it was subsequently sold to a valued customer who commenced a photographic restoration. Now described as being "fully matching numbers and complete", a recent inspection was undertaken at Bill McGrath's and a list of recent jobs done is available. Said to display excellent oil pressure, the car had been in the same ownership from 1982 up to its acquisition by the vendor in January 2014. Riding on aluminium Campagnolo wheels and attractively finished in blue with "complete and original" black interior and "excellent" chassis, this stylish and highly capable Grand Tourer recently completed a near 1,000 mile trip to Classic Le Mans which included 7 laps of the historic circuit and is now ready to be enjoyed.
