Some eighty-five years on from its introduction, the Austin 7's popularity shows little sign of waning. In spite - or perhaps because - of its utilitarian roots the model has provided an unlikely first step into motorsport for a countless multitude. Cheap to buy, easy to tune and hard to break (relatively speaking), the 7 utilised a lightweight A-frame chassis equipped with all-round leaf-sprung suspension (semi-elliptic front / quarter-elliptic rear), four-wheel drum brakes and a spiral bevel back axle. Powered by a 747cc four-cylinder sidevalve engine allied to three-speed (later four-speed) manual transmission, it was capable of some 50mph in standard tune but nearly two-and-a-half times that figure in Works supercharged single-seater guise! Indeed, it was enthusiasm for Herbert Austin's 'baby' that led to the foundation of the 750 Motor Club in 1939; an organisation which for many years seemed entirely focused on making decrepit 7s into improbably fast track racers, trials cars and road warriors.
Entered from a deceased estate, little is known about this particular Austin 7 Special. Finished in black with matching upholstery and green cycle wings, its frontal aspect is somewhat akin to that of a Mod's scooter (or Vintage Bentley). A wonderful period piece with character aplenty, 'OV 5690' is said to be basically sound but in need of recommissioning.
