Colchester Racing Developments' first Merlyns were Formula Juniors. Formula Ford, F3 and F2 cars followed. John Barrington Lewis and Richard Neale started the firm in modest village premises near Colchester. Production had ceased by the end of the 1970s.
This 1971 Mk21 chassis was originally a Formula B supplied to Race America of Dallas, USA, where Porter Brownlee and later David Pence took category wins in Regional SCCA Championship races. By the early 1990s, chassis 394/FB/4 belonged to Chicago privateer John Mayes who loaned it to Peter Denty, the respected racing car preparation specialist in Norfolk, James Denty driving it to victory in Class B (carburettor) of the 2000 Historic F2 Championship. It was acquired by the current owner early in 2001.
Powered by a 1.6-litre Ford BDA and with FT200 gearbox, it has continued to run competitively in International Historic F2 as part of the AA Historic Racing Team being a regular at leading Continental circuits such as Spa and Monza. AA sponsorship has ensured maintenance to a high standard and, with Peter Shaw and John Dunham driving, the car was overall runner-up in Class B of the 2001 Championship, third in 2002 and runner-up again in 2003.Eligible for both International Historic F2 and the Derek Bell series, and ready to race, it comes with FIA papers, six spare wheels and other spares. A second engine with zero miles run is also available by separate negotiation with the vendor.
