1933 Sunbeam 25hp Charlesworth Tourer

Sold for £21,938

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: OC 2859
Chassis No: 8009R
Mot Expiry: July 2006

Top of the range in 1933, the 23.8hp model, marketed as the 25hp, was another typically well-engineered Sunbeam design. Built on a sturdy, leaf-sprung, ladder frame chassis, its advanced specification included an overhead valve 3,359cc straight-six engine and powerful hydraulic drum brakes. Equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox (complete with right-hand change), it could be had with a variety of open and closed bodywork.
Finished in dark green over black with cream upholstery, this particular example is apparently the only series 'R' chassis recorded as having coachwork built to special order by Charlesworth of Coventry. Dispatched by the Wolverhampton works in June 1933, it was clothed with body number 12840 7 33 and registered as OC 2859 over the course of the next two months. Belonging at one time to prominent veteran Sunbeam enthusiast Charles South, it is also known to have been ensconced in the Norman Ball Transport Trust on the Isle of Wight between 1969 and 1991. As its recorded mileage upon entry was reputedly 13,371, the vendor believes that the 33,000 miles currently displayed by its odometer may possibly represent the total covered from new. Describing this unique car as being in good overall condition, he reports that it was subject of an engine rebuild some 12,000 miles ago. Treated to a re-bore, oversize pistons, fresh white metal bearings, replacement fibre timing gear, various cylinder head repairs and a new clutch, the dynamo, starter motor and water pump are also understood to have been fettled. Benefiting from a new radiator core, full stainless-steel exhaust system and stainless-steel braided brake hoses it comes with an easily removable tow bar. Thought to retain its original dashboard instrumentation, the Rotax Tripod headlights that flank its distinctive radiator are complemented by twin driving lamps and horns. Boasting a fully disappearing hood and sidecsreens, its history file comprises the following: a Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq repair and maintenance manual, a photocopy of the original handbook, various reproduction Works data sheets, STD Register information, a 1991 Sothebys catalogue, assorted bills / expired MOTs and a Vintage Sports Car Club buff form (classifying the car as 'Standard' for the purpose of their events).
