The second series of SLs was distinguished by the distinctive optional hardtop that earned the model its nickname of 'pagoda top'. The larger, third generation model (R107) was launched in 1971, initially with just a 3.5-litre engine (350SL) mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The car featured a two-door monocoque bodyshell with fully independent suspension - double wishbones/coil springs at the front and semi-trailing arms/coil springs at the rear. Braking was by discs all round - ventilated on the front. Over its phenomenal 18 year reign, the R107 range was powered by no less than eight different engines. The V8-powered 500SL variant was manufactured from 1980 to 1989, and with 240bhp on tap was a genuine 135mph car, with ample reserves of effortless acceleration.
The righthand drive Mercedes on offer is one of those mighty 500SLs. It was manufactured in 1985 and is equipped with automatic transmission and factory supplied hard top. 'B537 XCW' has apparently had just three owners from new and is currently felt by its vendor to have 'average-good' bodywork and Silver paintwork, and a 'good' V8 engine. The last service was carried out in May this year and the big Benz is now being sold complete with service history, some invoices, most old MOTs and one valid into May of next year.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
