1984 Jaguar XJ-S 6.0 HE Race Car

Lot details
Registration No: B120BNH
Chassis No: SAJJNAEW3BC118045
Mot Expiry: None

Embodying a decade's worth of development and testing (accrued via six predecessors) this is no ordinary Jaguar XJ-S racer. The work of marque specialist Hyper Engineering, the red fixed-head has been built to a standard, and at a cost, that few privateers could justify. Indeed, some of its hardware would not disgrace an XJR-9 Group C car. Retaining a 1984 identity (hence the 'B120 BNH' registration number) but based around a lightened 1990 bodyshell, it plays host to a full roll cage, uprated disc braking system (fronts gripped by AP 6-pot callipers, rears moved outboard), beefed-up suspension (including Spax double adjustable shock absorbers), variable electronic power steering and 17-inch alloy wheels (9J front, 10.5J rear) shod with 40-profile tyres. Such extensive modifications are necessary to keep the engine's prodigious outputs in check.

Estimated to be developing circa 475bhp, the 6-litre V12 is based around a Jaguar block fitted with Sigma Engineering cylinder heads and Cosworth pistons (refreshed and not raced since). Also able to boast a full Zytec fuel / ignition / management system remapped to race spec on TWR's dyno, total dry sump system, lip seal rear main, low-mounted aluminium radiator (as per the TWR Group A cars), lightened flywheel, detachable rear exhaust system built to 100db limit, four throttle body inlet manifolds with modified front air intakes and tuned tubular exhaust manifolds (identical in spec to those used on the Le Mans cars), it transmits power to the rear wheels via a triple plate clutch and Quaife five-speed dog gearbox (overhauled four races ago in December 2009).

Other modifications include: a plumbed-in fire extinguisher, foam-filled 120 litre fuel cell, Stack instrument revcounter, capillary water, oil temperature and oil pressure gauges and HDI lights. Reportedly possessing "superb power and torque plus staggering cornering abilities", the XJ-S is further understood to have raced in - or be eligible to race in - the following series: JEC Powered By Jaguar, Heritage Grand Touring, Future Classics (CSCC) and Classic Thunder (CTCRC). No stranger to competition, the car has been successfully campaigned at a variety of British and European circuits. Run at Sebring and Daytona as well, it was invited to take part in the New Zealand-based Bruce McLaren Festival a few years ago. Only being offered for sale to fund another Hyper Engineering project, this extravagantly executed Jaguar XJ-S racer is worthy of close inspection. Though, at the guide price suggested it could even be purchased as an indulgent track day car.

All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
