Notable as the first British un-supercharged sub-1000cc car to qualify for the prestigious Rudge-Whitworth Biennial Cup thanks to its strong performance at the 1933 Le Mans 24-hours, the Singer Nine Sports directly inspired the marque's `Le Mans' models. 1 of just 225 Nine Sports Four-Seaters made complete with hotspot manifold, remote extension gear lever and twin carburettors, chassis number 61339 was supplied new to Mr Edwards via F.W. Dixon of Middlesbrough (the garage business owned by famed motorcycle and car racer Freddie Dixon). Road registered as `XG 2539' on 27th March 1934, an accompanying continuation buff logbook shows that the Singer belonged to Flight Officer David Morris of RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire some twenty-two years later. Sold to fellow airman John Bell thereafter who retained possession into the 1960s, the Nine Sports had become a `barn find' by the time it entered the previous ownership during 2006. Thoroughly restored over the next five years, chassis 61339 was treated to a refurbished ash frame, re-skinned body (where necessary), professional respray in Goodwood Green, retrim in Pale Green leather with Dark Green carpets and professional engine / gearbox overhaul with many new and restored parts. Further benefiting from new weather gear and rejuvenated wire wheels shod with fresh tyres, `XG 2539' was reluctantly sold at our April 2013 IWM Duxford because of ill health. Now only being offered for sale again due to unforeseen adverse personal circumstances, the four-seater is variously rated by the vendor as "excellent" (engine, electrical equipment), "overhauled" (four-speed manual gearbox) or "as new" (bodywork, paintwork, interior trim). Taxed and MOT'd into September, this charming Singer Nine Sports is accompanied by a Pitmans Owner's Manual, Brooklands Book of the Singer Nine, extensive photographic restoration record and large file of invoices.
