Herbert Austin formed his own company in 1906. During WW1, Austin expanded and prospered in the armourments industry - but, in peacetime, his reliance on what had been his trusty Austin 20 model was to prove to be a commercial mistake and, by 1921, his company was in receivership. Fortunately Austin was able to restructure and appeal to a wider market with the Stanley Edge designed 1922 Austin 7, which became a solid seller.
This delightful early 1920s Austin, a right-hand drive 20hp model, first the historic and still surviving Longbridge works in 1922. At some time, almost certainly pre-war, chassis number 4PT 4091 was exported to New Zealand, from where it returned again to the UK in the early 1990s. The four-door open tourer is presented today in the as originally supplied Royal Blue with black wings and interior leather in dark brown. Indeed, the back section with the two separate occasional seats appears still to be the original hide, whilst apart from the seat bases, renewed at some stage, the front is also claimed to be very original.
Although by no means concours, this characterful motor car is pretty and exudes nice patina. All the nickel-plated lights are in lovely order, having been re-plated, as is the radiator grille. Hood fabric, side screens and carpeting have been renewed in the recent past. The car comes with complete weather equipment including rear compartment screening. Overall, chassis, body, paintwork, interior, 20hp four-cylinder motor and four-speed gearbox are rated by the entrant as being in good condition.
