Faster, harder-edged and more driver-orientated than its R107 predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz R129-series SL was launched at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show. Brimful of cutting-edge technology, its impressively rigid two-door monocoque shell featured an integral roll over bar that deployed in less than a third of a second (if the car ever sensed an impending flip) and a fully automatic convertible roof. Known for its sure-footed handling, the R129 utilised all-round independent suspension, ABS brakes and power assisted steering. Powered by a variety of six- and eight-cylinder engines all allied to automatic transmission, it was the sportscar of choice for many contemporary F1 drivers. The range's initial flagship, the 500SL model marked the debut of Mercedes' four-valve-per-cylinder, dual-overhead V8 powerplants with variable valve timing. Thus, its 4973cc V8 was credited with 326hp and 332lbft of torque. Reputedly capable of over 150mph and 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds, it was nevertheless a paragon of refinement.
Finished in almandine red metallic with beige leather upholstery, this particular right-hand drive example was supplied new to Hong Kong. Imported to the UK by a gentleman who is thought to have been only its second owner it subsequently passed through the hands of Nottingham-based Mercedes main agents, B&K Thomas. Boasting air-conditioning, a wind deflector, central locking and electric windows / mirrors / front seats (the latter with a memory function) as standard, this highly specified 2+2 also comes with optional 'glass' hardtop (reputed to have cost some £8,000), CD-stacker stereo system, Xenon headlamps and BBS alloy wheels. Treated to a nigh-on £7,000 engine refurbishment in 2003 by Mercedes of Manchester, more recent work has seen it benefit from a "new power steering pump, tyres and front springs". Believed but not warranted to have covered 77,628kms (approximately 48,500 miles) from new, this impressive 500SL is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until June 9th 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
