Though still badged Esprit, the Turbo model unveiled in 1980 was effectively a brand new car based on a thoroughly revised zinc-galvanised backbone chassis of increased torsional stiffness. The front suspension was borrowed from the Elite, increasing the track by an inch, while the rear setup was revised with unequal length transverse links, radius arms and coil springs. Extensively reworked by original stylist Giorgetto Giugiaro, the sleek fibreglass bodyshell gained: large wrap-around front and rear bumpers, a full width front spoiler for improved airflow to the larger radiator and oil cooler, a redesigned tailgate area, and NACA ducts moulded into the sills to provide cooling for the engine compartment. Cockpit changes included: a turbo boost gauge and new 170mph speedometer. The air conditioning controls were now sited in a centre console and the stereo relocated overhead. The seats were reshaped and equipped with head restraints. The 16-valve all-alloy four-cylinder engine was increased in capacity to 2174cc. Together with a Garrett T3 turbocharger mounted downstream of twin Dellorto carburetters, this resulted in outputs of 210bhp and 200lbft - sufficient to endow the slippery-shaped Lotus with a 0-60mph time of 5.6 seconds and a top speed of over 150mph. Arguably the most famous of the 2,274 Turbo Esprits made were those that appeared in the 1981 James Bond film - For Your Eyes Only.
The right-hand drive, August 1981 example being sold is resplendent in Dark Blue Metallic bodywork complemented by Deep Red side stripes and a matching Red leather interior. The registered keeper reportedly acquired the Lotus ten years ago, since when it is said to have been passionately maintained and improved and only used for the odd show and Sunday run. We understand the indicated mileage of 55,000 is supported by a large collection of old MOTs and receipts. `PPK 65X' has a fresh set of tyres on the correct and desirable split-rim alloys and the turbo has recently been replaced. Stated to be presented in very good order inside and out, the Esprit is now offered complete with large history file, handbooks, workshop manual and fresh MOT.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
