Increasingly stringent US impact and exhaust emission regulations in what was Jaguar’s largest and most vital foreign currency earning export market added weight and reduced performance on their E- Type in Series 2 4.2-litre guise. Therefore the Coventry manufacturer was forced to come up with something completely different, but which would still fit under much the same bonnet.
Their solution was a new 5.3-litre 272bhp V12 which virtually filled the engine bay of a new, more powerful and, most importantly of all, much cleaner S3 roadster and coupe with 2+2-seat accommodation. This new Jaguar power unit was the first mass-produced twelve since the demise of the Lincoln Continental in 1948. Readily identified by its distinctive cross-hatch rad grille, the new E- Type now had power-steering as standard.
The entrant tells us that this fixed head V12 E-Type, which first left the Coventry factory 7 January 1972, has been serviced recently with exhaust manifold and pipe both renewed and a new headlining fitted. The current condition of the monocoque is described as good as are the body panels with the blue paintwork said to be OK. The 5343cc twelve-cylinder motor, four-speed manual gearbox and electrical equipment are all reportedly in very good order.
The 76,565 miles displayed when entered for this sale is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total mileage for the GT from new. It also drives excellently, he says. With the MOT test having only just been passed, the current certificate will be valid until March of next year.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
