Lot details Registration No: AJN875K Chassis No: GA2SS/149848 Mot Expiry: June 2007
Introduced in 1967, the MG 1300 was the sportiest derivative of BMC's highly successful, Sir Alec Issigonis-designed (ADO-16) small car programme. Utilising the same Pininfarina styled monocoque bodyshell, rack and pinion steering and hydrolastic independent suspension as its contemporaneous Austin 1100 sibling, it was powered by a detuned version of the 1275cc Mini Cooper S engine (in first single and then twin SU carburettor guises). Upgraded to MKII specification alongside the other upmaket derivtives of the ADO-16 range during 1968, the model still wore its distinctive 'MG' radiator grille but benefited from a more welcoming cabin complete with handsome burr walnut dashboard. A strong seller, the MG 1300 remained in production until 1971 by which time some 32,549 are thought to have been made.
Finished in blue with blue leatherette upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (wheels / tyres), "very good" (1275cc engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, paintwork) or "excellent" (chassis, bodywork) condition. Reportedly featured in a Practical Classics magazine article on the history of MG, 'AJN 975K' is further understood to have been "the subject of a total renovation by Bob West, MG specialists, in 1998" which cost some £11,607. Said to "have had little use since", the current ownership has nevertheless seen the car "fitted with the correct period radio and spot / fog lamps". Treated to sundry other improvements last year the MG sports a stainless steel exhaust. Believed but not warranted to have covered just 38,000 miles from new, 'AJN 875K' is offered for sale with history file (£11,607 Bob West invoice, relevant Practical Classics issue etc), photographic restoration record and MOT certificate valid until June 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
