Lot details Registration No: 2400 UK Chassis No: GAN1-10811 Mot Expiry: July 2006
Introduced in 1961, the MG Midget (like its badge engineered sibling the Austin-Healey Sprite MKII) was intended to appeal to those looking for a small, fast, secure-handling and above all fun car. Priced at £669 15s 10d, it was built around a monocoque chassis equipped with independent front suspension, quarter elliptic leaf-sprung rear axle and rack and pinion steering. Powered by a short stroke 948cc four-cylinder A-series engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox, it was capable of over 80mph. In keeping with its low weight / low cost ethos, the MKI Midget had no external door handles, Perspex sidescreens and a collapsible hood that stowed in its boot. Only in production for a scant three years (and a single season with the 948cc unit), MKI Midgets are becoming increasingly scarce.
Finished in pale blue with contrasting darker blue upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in good overall condition. Said to have had just one owner (whose name changed on marriage in 1967), it retains its original buff logbook and driver's handbook. Benefiting from a replacement clutch, this "very rare, original car" is believed but not warranted to have covered 77,000 miles from new. Fitted with a radio and heater, we are informed that it should possess a fresh MOT certificate by the time of sale.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
