Lot details Registration No: 7358 FD Chassis No: 6000/J3 Mot Expiry: Nov 2004
Pre-WW2, London garage proprietor Sydney Allard successfully competed with his own trials cars powered by Ford V8 or Lincoln V12 engines, and sold replicas of his cars to others. Production resumed postwar and, driving one of his P1s, Allard won the 1952 Monte Carlo Rally.
The same year, his Clapham-based marque launched their most celebrated model, the J2X, with new chassis frame made from small diameter tubes with sides stiffened with plates, though retaining the J2's De Dion axle. The majority of the 83 J2X built, some with all-enveloping bodywork, were shipped to the US where they were weekend raced by their private owners with great success - inevitably, originals have become extremely rare and, consequently, very expensive.
This 1992-made Hardy-Allard replica - constructed by Hardy Motors of Ramona, California, builders of such exciting sportscars since 1988 - offers a truly authentic J2X experience of very 'hairy-chested' motoring at a much more accessible level.
With a high quality composite bodyshell in dark blue with correct badging and accessories clothing a purpose-built chassis, Hardy-Allards offer modern engineering and running gear. A practical Chevrolet 5735cc V8 fed by Holley carb provides huge power output with gigantic torque, so much so that the 4-speed manual change becomes an amusing plaything. The 2-seater cockpit is really comfortable and beautifully trimmed in Oxblood leather with excellent detailing to the dash.
Only used for high days and holidays, this striking rep with historic profile is a really capable performer.
