Lot details Registration No: FJU 403 Chassis No: Y/2793 Mot Expiry: Nov 2006
Praised by the contemporary motoring press for its speed, comfort and handling, the MG YA was introduced in 1947. Based around a brand new chassis, the model featured independent coil and wishbone front suspension, a 'live' rear axle, rack and pinion steering and four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a single carburettor version of the marque's renowned XPAG 1250cc four-cylinder engine allied to four-speed manual transmission, the four-door saloon boasted a 71mph top speed. Elegantly understated, its handsome lines were the work of Gerald Palmer. Benefiting from a well-appointed cabin, the YA remained in production until 1951 (by which time some 6,158 are thought to have been sold).
Finished in maroon with beige leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (wheels / tyres), "no problems" (electrical equipment), "very sound" (chassis), "very good" (four-speed manual gearbox) or "excellent" (1250cc engine) condition. Reportedly "rescued from a barn during 1997", 'FJU 403' has since been returned to running order but otherwise left untouched. Reputedly retaining its original bodywork and paintwork which are showing signs of corrosion (door bottoms, boot etc) and fading respectively, the saloon is also thought to have kept its factory-fitted interior trim. A scenario reinforced by the presence of such period items as a dealer's dashboard label and push-button HMV radio. Said to "drive really well" and to have been used by the seller "on a twice weekly basis for the last two months", this timewarp MG is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until November 24th 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until June 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
