Christened the 'Dart' ahead of its 1959 New York Motor Show launch but hurriedly renamed the 'SP250' following the threat of legal action from Chrysler, Daimler's striking new sportscar allied a traditional cruciform-braced ladder-frame chassis to cutting-edge fibreglass bodywork. By 1960, Daimler was in Jaguar's hands and the so-called B-specification SP250s featured a much stiffer frame, equipped with additional outriggers and a strengthening hoop between the B posts. The jewel in the car's crown was its engine, a silky smooth 2.5-litre V-8 unit designed by Edward Turner. Suspension was independent with wishbones and coil springs at the front and a live axle hung on leaf springs at the rear. Braking was by hydraulically-operated discs all-round; useful given the model's 120mph plus performance.
The right-hand drive SP250 being sold was acquired by the vendor in 1987, since when it has reportedly been treated to a degree of ongoing mechanical and interior restoration, whilst retaining the car's originality. This has included: new clutch, petrol tank and wiring loom; refreshed leather seats and facia; overhauled fuel system, brakes, suspension and wheel hubs (though, the steering retains its original worm-and-peg set-up). The vendor currently considers the bodywork as "reasonable", the Dark Green paintwork as "average" and the red leather upholstery, engine and gearbox as "good". 'YDG 684' is MOT'd into May 2013.
