Lot details Registration No: DAF 659 Chassis No: D7/766/LT Mot Expiry: July 2014
One of just 24 Four-Seater Tourers made, chassis D7/766/LT was supplied new via Lancelot Prideaux-Brune's London-based Winter Garden garage to Mrs Cicely Ethel Wilkinson of St Minver, Cornwall on 17th April 1937. A former Aston Martin patron and founder member of the AMOC, Prideaux-Brune had a family estate in Padstow and may well have known Mrs Wilkinson socially. An intrepid lady who not only learnt to fly during WW1 but also drove ambulances on the Western Front, she kept `DAF 659' until May 1938. Thereafter, it is known to have belonged to John Glaisyer, Frank Scrase, David Brister, Duncan Andrew and A.W.F. Simmonds before being barn-stored by the Hollinshead family for some thirty-seven years. Entering the current (eighth) ownership via our October 2003 Buxton auction, the Aston was promptly entrusted to Simon Hawkes Classic Restoration for an extensive `chassis up' refurbishment. Thoroughly overhauled with parts supplied by marque specialist Ecurie Bertelli, the SOHC engine gained an uprated EN40 billet steel crankshaft, Arrow con-rods and 1.5-in SU carburettors not to mention a new camshaft, timing chain, clutch, high-compression Omega pistons, inlet / exhaust valves and big-end shells plus reconditioned water /oil pumps etc. A 1960s modification, the Jaguar four-speed manual gearbox was retained but with the addition of a competition overdrive switch. New front / rear hubs and drive shafts were sourced from Orson Equipment, while Ecurie Bertelli rejuvenated the kingpins and provided five new 17-inch wire wheels etc. J. Krych, Adrian Sidwell and S&T Plating were responsible for attending to the interior trim, instruments and brightwork respectively. The work took some three years and £83,000 to complete. Since then `DAF 659' has undertaken numerous memorable runs including Brittany, Normandy and the Goodwood Revival. Offered for sale with original buff logbooks, copy build records, restoration film, numerous bills / invoices and MOT certificate valid until July 2014.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
