The Land Rover was launched in 1948 and, incredibly, production of the traditional Defender only finished in January 2016 after a continuous run of 67 years. Outwardly, there is little to distinguish the post-1983 vehicles from the Series III Land Rover. Internally, coil springs offered a more comfortable ride and a permanent four-wheel-drive system derived from the Range Rover featuring a two-speed transfer gearbox with a lockable centre differential. A modernised interior and a new series of progressively more powerful and modern engine characterised things under the skin. The Defender was fitted with an all-new 2.5-litre, five-cylinder in-line turbo/diesel engine and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
Manufactured in 2000, the Defender 90 TD5 offered was supplied new to South Africa, remaining there until 2011 when it was repatriated to the United Kingdom with some 41,000 miles recorded on the odometer. Passing through three keepers before being purchased into the current family ownership in 2016, the Land Rover is offered for sale now with some 79,000 miles on the odometer. Benefitting from the fitment of a new galvanised chassis recently, the 90 has received some £12,800 worth of further improvements (not including the chassis which cost c.£3,000) while in the current ownership, with the vast majority of the expenditure with two Land Rover specialists, LRC 4x4 of Congleton and Machins of Leek.
These improvements have included extensive mechanical works with a new clutch, new brakes, a new alternator, attention to the electrics and bodywork repairs. Just prior to entering into the current family ownership, the Land Rover further received a new turbo (in 2016). Supplied with a history file that includes numerous previous invoices that document the improvements and service history, a collection of MOT certificates, and a current V5C document. Lavished with significant mechanical attention while with the vendor, the Land Rover can now be pressed into use as is or could be cosmetically improved.
