An evolution of the Eclat, the Lotus Excel (a.k.a. the Eclat Excel) was introduced in 1982. Praised by the contemporary motoring press for its strong performance and superlative handling, the newcomer utilised a galvanised version of Lotus's familiar 'backbone' chassis equipped with all-round coil-over independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and high-geared rack and pinion steering. Powered by Lotus's own 2174cc DOHC four-cylinder engine allied to a Toyota sourced five-speed manual gearbox and final drive (the British and Japanese companies were engineering partners at the time), the model had some 160bhp and 160lbft of torque at its disposal. More capacious and economical than its Esprit stablemate, the 2+2 sportscar was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 7.1 seconds and 131mph. Metamorphosing into the Excel SE for 1986, the 'family friendly' Lotus remained in production until 1992 (by which time some 2,159 are thought to have been made).
Finished in metallic ice blue with blue fabric upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" overall condition. Said to "drive very well" and to have benefited from a recent brake overhaul, it rides on alloy wheels. Practical yet fun, this striking Lotus is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until November 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
