Launched in 1961, the Michelotti styled TR4 was the first TR-series sports car to incorporate wind-up windows and through-flow ventilation. With independent coil sprung front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and disc/drum brakes; its chassis layout was similar to that of its TR3A predecessor. However, the adoption of rack and pinion steering and a four-inch wider track gave the later model notably better handling. Powered by a 2138cc, four-cylinder, ohv engine developing some 104bhp and 128lbft of torque, the TR4 was reputedly capable of 110mph and 0-60mph in 10.5 seconds. Such performance was easily accessed thanks to the presence of synchromesh on each of the four speeds in its manual gearbox (another TR first). Updated in late 1964 as the TR4A, it gained a new grille, revised body-to-chassis mountings and most importantly of all independent rear suspension.
Finished in Old English White with black upholstery, this particular right-hand drive example has been part of the collection since 1988. Fitted with a 'Surrey Top' which permits more civilised open-air motoring, it further benefits from a wooden dashboard, centrally mounted handbrake, Philips pushbutton radio, silver painted wire wheels and twin exhausts.
PLEASE NOTE: This car is to right-hand drive specification and not left hand drive as stated in the catalogue text. The photographs though are correct and show the correct position of the steering wheel and it is the actual car.
