In the late 1950s BMW were struggling for survival with an unusual range of models which at one end consisted of the Isetta and 600 microcars and at the other the expensive and exotic 502 & 507 models. However, these financial worries were soon forgotten when in 1961 BMW virtually invented the concept of the upper middle class sports saloon with the 1500. An immediate hit, the range was quickly expanded with the launch of the 2-door '02 Series' models, and in doing so BMW created a line of models which have become almost symbolic of aspirational motoring the world over. The 3-Series replaced the 02 Series models in 1975, the E30 version of which was launched in 1983 adding even more refinement to the 3-Series sporting style in BMWs traditional policy of constant gradual refinement. In 1988 BMW expanded its famed M-Series of motorsport orientated models with the M3 version of the E30, a racetrack bred model which also turned out to be just as exhilarating on the road. In 1991 when the new E36 version of the 3-Series appeared BMW took its time in developing an M3 version of the new model but when the new M3 Coupe was revealed in 1993 it proved to be well worth the wait, adding a generous dose of refinement to the M3's huge list of talents as a drivers car.
This particular yellow M3 is a left hand drive Coupe model originally supplied to a BMW main dealer in Spain and is ideal for the serious track driver having been converted to full Group A specification. Included in the history file are very comprehensive French FIA papers and we are told that the car has been successfully campaigned in Group A. Described by the vendor as having good engine, transmission, electrics, bodywork and paintwork, the wheels are said to be fair but the car will be supplied with a spare set of wheels. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a fully race prepared M3 and could give a great deal of fun to the new owner.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
