Increasingly stringent US impact and emission regulations in what was Jaguar's largest and most vital foreign currency earning export market added weight and reduced performance on the E-Type Series 2 4.2 model. The Coventry car maker was therefore forced to come up with a solution.
The resultant 5.3-litre 272bhp V12 power unit was not only totally new, but was the first mass-produced twelve cylinder motor since the 1948 demise of the equally legendary Lincoln Continental and virtually filled the under-bonnet area. Clearly much more powerful and, more importantly, with cleaner exhaust, this V12 powered the replacement S3 roadster and 2+2 fixed head coupe models. The new car had a model-distinctive cross-hatch radiator grille with power-steering as standard, whilst automatic gearbox and air-conditioning were standard specification on the Coupe.
Offered here is a 1973-built, right-hand-drive S3 roadster, the chassis of which is said by the entrant to be good, with red painted body panels as seen, chrome steel wheels good and interior in biscuit leather excellent. The 5343cc twelve-cylinder engine is reportedly in good order as are four-speed manual transmission and electrical equipment.
Believed to have belonged to Bonnie Tyler's husband, this open V12 E-Type with attractive NOW 700M registration has lots of history on file, says the vendor, and a believed to be genuine 51,676 total mileage displayed on the odometer when entered. The current MOT pass certificate is valid until June. The E-Type has always been one of the most desirable of all the British classics to own, an open S3 arguably the ultimate version.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
