Marque founder John Marston produced his first Sunbeam motor car, a De Dion powered voiturette, in 1901 and formed the Sunbeam Motor Company to make others in 1905. Louis Coatalen joined the Wolverhampton firm as Chief Engineer shortly afterwards and Sunbeam quickly became a force to be reckoned with in motor sport, with even more Grand Prix success and record breaking during the 1920s. To beat the magic 200mph Land Speed milestone, Sunbeam constructed an enormous car for Sir Henry Segrave to run down Daytona Beach in Florida where he achieved a new World Record 203.79mph in March 1927.
This 1927-built Sunbeam 25hp was acquired by the vendor three years ago at an auction in Kent, where for the previous twenty years it had been in the ownership of a local farmer. The current condition of chassis, open tourer bodywork, maroon over black paintwork, interior trimmed in deep maroon buttoned-hide, 6-cylinder engine and 4-speed gearbox is reportedly good. The clutch has been renewed and the brake shoes relined. Headlamps and sidelamps have been refurbished and nickel plated by Vintage Headlamp Restoration. All the sidescreens are present and correct and rear seat occupants are sheltered by an Auster screen.
The owner tells us that the motor, which has never failed to start, has always been very smooth and the right hand gate-change good to use. The vintage tourer performs very well, he says. Both the current MOT and tax exempt discs are dated until May.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
