'The most fun competition car I have ever driven' - Chris Conoley, MASS Racing Developments

A proper 'weapons grade' competition car, this lightweight two-door saloon was built in late 1993 by the Carrello BMW Team for use in the Western Australian State Endurance Racing Series and Shell Australian Touring Car Championship. Based on an original, RHD 1602 bodyshell but with a nicely integrated multi-point rollcage and uprated brakes / suspension, chassis 1554438 was issued with a Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) logbook on 5th May 1994. A regular front runner that scored numerous podiums and class wins during 1994, 1995 and 1996, the 1602 was only sidelined by the addition of an ex-Schnitzer Team M3 (E30) Group A Evolution II racer to the Carrello stable. Entering the current ownership during December 2007, chassis 1554438 has since been campaigned by invitation in the UK and Europe. A surprise class winner against slick-shod BMW M3 (E30) opposition at an FHR Endurance Youngtimer Spa race, the Cobalt Blue projectile has also had outings with Motor Racing Legends and Masters Historic Racing at the likes of Brands Hatch, Donington and Portimao etc. Hugo Holder of the Classic Sports Car Club has reportedly said that the BMW would be welcomed as a regular entrant if it was fitted with 'bubble' wheelarch extensions (rather than the current Zakspeed-style ones). The 2-litre M10 engine currently fitted was overhauled by frequent co-driver Chris Conoley of MASS Racing Developments in October 2009. The work included a replacement block and steel crankshaft plus custom machined piston domes etc. A dyno run at the time recorded outputs of 210.2bhp @ 7,005rpm and 163.4lbft of torque @ 6,552rpm. The four-cylinder unit is allied to a Getrag five-speed manual gearbox and the total weight of the car has been estimated at just 820kg.
