Lot details Registration No: VAS 784 Chassis No: W220/18701307428/52 Mot Expiry: Feb 2006
Introduced at the 1951 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz 220 (W187) boasted an advanced specification that belied its elegant if rather conservative styling. Designed around a rigid chassis frame (fabricated from oval section tubular steel), it was equipped with fully independent suspension (transverse leaf front, coil-sprung swing axle rear), a four-speed, column-change manual gearbox and hydraulic drum brakes. Powered by an all new 2195cc ohv six-cylinder engine that developed some 80bhp and 105lbft of torque it was reputedly capable of 90mph. A full four / five seater, the top of the range Cabriolet B variant was reassuringly expensive. Thus, by the time production ended in 1955 a mere 997 are though to have been dispatched.
According to information supplied by the vendor, this particular example was built in August 1952 to the special order of an American officer serving in Germany. Accompanying him at the end of his tour to Virginia, USA, it was imported into the UK in 1991. Subsequently treated to an eleven year restoration by its then keeper during which "all numbers were confirmed correct by the factory archives in Stuttgart", it is now resplendent in gloss black with contrasting red leather upholstery. A rare survivor, this imposing Mercedes is offered for sale with MOT valid until February 11th 2006, road tax until February 2006 and photographic rebuild record.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
