Lot 52 - 1925 Sunbeam 20/60 Sports Drophead Coupe

1925 Sunbeam 20/60 Sports Drophead Coupe

Lot details
Registration No: RK 3517
Chassis No: 1704 ED
Mot Expiry: July 2005

This Sports 20/60 first left the Sunbeam works in 1925 and has been fitted with drophead coupe coachwork by Brainsby. We understand that of the twenty-two 20/60s built by the Wolverhampton manufacturer and known to the STD register, three cars are in to New Zealand, seven in Australia and twelve remain in Britain. According to the Sunbeam Talbot Darracq Register, four were Sports models and this particular chassis, fitted as it is with 2-door drophead coupe coachwork, probably from a Star, is reckoned to be unique.

Last rebuilt in the late 1980s by Rex Neate, RK 3517 was acquired by the current owner in January 1995, since when it has been exercised on a few tours, one involving a successful ascent of the infamous Stelvio Pass in the Dolomites with all those endless hairpin bends. The owner tells us that during his ownership the water pump has been renewed and an electric fan fitted, whilst regular services have been entrusted to a marque specialist and only some 24100 miles have been completed since the rebuild.

The current condition of chassis and bodywork is described as being very good, with both the beige over black paintwork and the red leather interior also rated as good. The 3.2-litre six, the 4-speed manual gearbox and the electrical equipment are also reportedly in very good order and the wire wheels good. Although by no means a concours car, says the vendor, this extremely characterful, high quality motor car is claimed to be absolutely on-the-button and ready for the next fortunate owner to event.

All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
