The Maserati 3200 GT broke cover in 1998. It was a svelte luxury Coupe styled by Italdesign, whose founder, Giorgetto Giugiaro, had penned such past classics as the Ghibli, Bora and Merak for Maserati. The car was powered by a version of the twin-turbo 3.2-litre V8 engine found in the Quattroporte IV and Shamal, retuned to give 365bhp. The 3200 GT was superseded by the 4200 GT, which was available in Coupe or Spyder configuration - the Spyder was unveiled at the 2001 Frankfurt motor show and the Coupe at the Detroit Salon a few months later. The cars were a direct evolution of the smaller engined 3200 GT.
The 4200 GT Coupe was a genuine four-seater capable of comfortably seating four adults. Unlike its turbocharged predecessor, it was powered by a normally aspirated, Ferrari-based V8 engine producing 390bhp from 4244cc. The unit was coupled to a six-speed gearbox with either manual or paddle shift. The suspension was by light alloy double wishbones all-round, to which one had the option of adding an adaptive damping system called 'Skyhook'. Braking was by Brembo four-pot callipers operating on large cross-drilled, ventilated discs.
The Maserati on offer is a right-hand drive 2003 model 4200 GT Coupe with six-speed manual transmission. It sports red coachwork complemented by a cream leather interior. The service record appears to confirm the indicated mileage of 22,400 and shows the first two services to have been carried out by Maserati Lancaster, the third by Maserati Manchester and the most recent one by Luigi Motor Services. The vendor describes the paintwork, engine, transmission and interior trim as "good".
These stylish modern-day Maseratis bristle with technology and offer a lot of performance per pound in the current market. Only time will tell whether they are gilt-edged classics of the future.
